Once Upon a Broken Heart

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber and sadly forgot to review it when I first read it. I read it again when I realized I needed to read The Ballad of Never After. I was excited to read it again because I remembere

d how much I loved it. And it was just as good as I remember if not more.

Stephanie Garber did a great job with this novel. I have not had the chance to read her Caraval series, but it is my understanding that Once Upon a Broken Heart is in the same world as that series. I love the world she created here and the characters. Evangeline Fox quickly became a relatable character. She experienced her first heartache and decided to take action on stopping the upcoming nuptials of her ex beau and her stepsister. This decision unleashed a chain of events which took her for a ride and changed how she began to view love. She prays to the Prince of Hearts is the Fate she to whom she chose to pray because it was said he was searching for his true love. Evangeline ends up having an adventure with Jacks the Prince of Hearts. She doesn’t know what is true and she has to discover for herself who to believe and what is real.

Once Upon a Broken Heart is a very enjoyable story. It is very hard to put down. As one of the blurbs states, it “casts a spell”. It is a great way to describe this book. Reading through the decisions Evangeline makes and the people she meets. Rags to riches but at what cost. I could not put it down. I will recommend this to my friends as well. It is a great story with twists and turns that the reader will not see coming.
